Public health advisory: High levels of toxins found in Island Park Reservoir

July 2024 · 2 minute read

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (IDHW) has issued a Public Health Advisory for Island Park Reservoir.

If you plan to recreate near Island Park Reservoir, IDHW says to use caution. Recent samples from Island Park Reservoir show high amounts of toxin-producing cyanobacteria. The toxins they produce (cyanotoxins) can be harmful to people, pets and livestock, according to IDHW.

Avoid swimming or making contact with the water at Island Park Reservoir. Do not let children drink the water or get any on them. Do not drink or cook with the water. Boiling or filtering the water does not remove the toxins and can increase the risk of becoming sick.

If you eat fish from the water, clean and wash fish thoroughly in uncontaminated water, remove all fat and internal organs, and remove the skin. Cyanotoxins can build up in fish, and the risk to people is unknown, says DHW.

Pets or livestock can get sick or die within minutes to days after cyanotoxin exposure.

Dogs can become sick first because they are more likely to swim in or drink contaminated water or lick contaminated water or bloom material from their fur. Wash them immediately with clean water and seek veterinary care if your pets or livestock seem sick after going in or drinking the water.
