María Concepción Alonso Bustillo, professionally known as Maria Conchita Alonso, was born on June 29, 1957, in  Cienfuegos, Cuba.

When she was five years old, her family moved to Venezuela following the Cuban Revolution.

Alonso began a career in music when she was a child. She sang traditional Venezuelan songs with her mother at local gatherings. At the age of 16, Maria won the Miss Venezuela pageant and went on to compete in the Miss World pageant. After high school, she studied acting in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, before moving to Los Angeles, situated in the U.S. state of California, at the age of 20.

In Los Angeles, Alonso established herself as an actress and singer. She featured in several Hollywood movies and television shows like The Running Man (1987), Predator 2 (1990), Falcon Crest (1984-1985), Beverly Hills 90210 (1995-1996) and Desperate Housewives (2006-2007). She also appeared in the Latin version of Desperate Housewives (Amas de Casa Desesperadas) for Univision Network.

Alonso also released successful Latin music albums, with her first gold album and number-one song on the charts, Love Maniac, released in 1979 under the name Ámbar. Her second album, María Conchita (1984), made her an international singing star in the Spanish-speaking market and earned her first of three Grammy Award nominations (1985, 1988, 1994). Her best-known song, “Vamos a Bailar”, was used as the soundtrack of the film popular film, Scarface.

In 1995, Alonso became the first Latin-born actress to star in a Broadway show, playing “Aurora” in Kiss of the Spider Woman. She also featured in The Vagina Monologues (2005) and Hair (2009). She also starred in the romantic comedies, Chasing Papi (2003) and The Last Guy on Earth (2006). In addition, Maria was a guest star in the live-action film of the comic book El Muerto and appeared in the film Material Girls (2006).

In 2008, she hosted VH1’s ¡Viva Hollywood! alongside popular Puerto Rican actor and model, Carlos Ponce. She also featured in the werewolf horror film, Wolf Moon, directed by Dana Mennie. In 2013, Alonso appeared in Rob Zombie’s The Lords of Salem.

Alonso was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for “Best Actress” for her performance in the 1985 film, Moscow on the Hudson. She also received awards from the Venezuelan government for her contribution to Latin music.

In 2015, she became a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Latin American Music Awards.
