The Indian man who captured global headlines a couple years ago after buying a shirt made entirely of gold, Datta Phuge, has been battered to death by assailants in India.
Phuge was attacked late Thursday by his would be murderers in western Pune, the BBC reports.
A money lender, police believe the attack might have been connected to a dispute over money. His son witnessed the attack, but was left alive by the assailants.
Four people are in police custody in connection with the attack, which police believe might have involved as many as twelve people wielding stones and a sharp weapon.
Phuge became famous back in 2013 when he bought a cloth made entirely of gold, saying it was his dream to own gold regalia. He’s famous in his homeland for dressing entirely in gold, head to toe.
“Some people ask me why I’m wearing so much gold but it was my dream. People have different aspirations. Some elite people want to own an Audi or Mercedes, and have big cars. I chose gold,” he told the BBC at the time.
