LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (WKRC) - Disney World has removed a character from its Magic Kingdom theme park over fears he might offend guests.
According to The New York Post,Liver Lips McGrowl from the "Country Bear Jamboree" at Disney's Magic Kingdom park will not be returning to the stage when the attraction opens today, following a seven-month hiatus. Liver Lips McGrowl was one of 18 animatronics that performed for guests at the attraction, which first opened in 1971.
Per Disney blog Inside the Magic, the Jamboree has undergone a significant transformation, which will ultimately exclude Liver Lips McGrowl. Per The Magic, the official decision was made because the term "liver lips" is considered derogatory and offensive because of its association with excessive alcohol consumption, which can result in liver damage.
According to The Street, the term "liver lips" has also been used as a derogatory term against African Americans.
The Magic reported that Disney officials deemed the term "outdated and insensitive" and have made the decision to reimagine the character as Romeo McGrowl, which the blog says reflects Disney's commitment to a more inclusive and respectful environment for those visiting its parks and properties. According toThe Post, Romeo McGrowl will look similar to Liver Lips.
Hosted at the Grizzly Hall, the attraction will re-open as the "Country Bear Musical Jamboree" in Frontierland, per The Post.According to Variety, the updated attraction will feature new musical numbers and a fresh script.
